Dog Days

Our dogs are like our children and I think they deserve a little shout-out on this fine Friday. Smile

Last night I had the dogs up on the bed while I was packing and doing laundry. I usually give Stella her bone just to keep her occupied while she’s up there. Well, Kahlua decided it was her turn to try out said bone. Mind you, the thing is the size of Kahlua. But she snagged it and went to town. Stella was a little concerned, but she was a good girl and shared it with Kahlua. Sweet sisters.

Stella was kind enough to help me with my Fantasy Football team last weekend. Winking smile

And this is pretty much my favorite video of all time. Kahlua tolerates Stella, but lets her know what’s up if Stella gets too close. Only because Stella is like a giant compared to Kahlua and Stella has floppy paws that would come down on her like a ton of bricks should she get too excited. So Kahlua lets her know who’s boss every now and then. On this particular evening they were actually playing.

And because this song popped into my head - and has continued to stay there once I decided on the title for this post - here is your song for Friday. Smile

Sleepy Stella

I get such a kick out of how Stella decides to sleep sometimes.

Under the coffee table…Stella 001

Under the blankets… Stella 002Stella 008

In the back seat of the truck…Stella 003

On her back… Stella 009

She was dead asleep in both of these pictures. And when she sleeps like this is when she snores the loudest. Ha!

Stella 004

Lounging out on the patio. On the comfy patio chair. Under the big umbrella… :)

Stella 005

On a cute blanket…Stella 006

Yes, in the suitcase. I think she missed us… Stella 007

She’s not allowed in our bed, but we made an exception this morning since I was changing the sheets anyways, and she got some good snuggle time in with her daddy...

Kahlua was none too thrilled about this new development…Pets 008

Meet Stella

This big little cutie, essentially found her home with us, a little over a week ago.

First Week 018

Last week we had a leak in our kitchen faucet, so the repair guy was here during the day fixing it. He had left the back door open, as well as the side gate because he had to go in and out of the house.

First Week 039

Then, all of the sudden, as the repair guy is under the sink, this dog comes crawling between his legs! The repair guy assumed this dog was our dog, so he made sure to put her in the backyard and lock the gate before he left.

First Week 026

When Kevin got home from work, you can imagine his surprise when he saw this sitting at our back door. Poor thing was freezing because it was raining that day (yes, there was indeed rain last week). So he brought her into the garage, gave her some food and water and a warm blanket to lay on.

First Week 014

Once I got home from work and met this cutie, I immediately fell in love. How could you not!? Right away we both said we wanted to keep her. But we knew the right thing to do would be to try and find her owners.

First Week 023

We took her to a vet nearby to see if she had a chip. She did, and the lady at the vet tried calling two different numbers, with no such luck. The chip was only registered with the vet that had implanted it. So, Stella had to stay with us that night until we could call the vet the next morning once they opened. Darn! ;)

First Week 008

Of course, it was hard not to get even more attached to her as the night went on. She was so well behaved and really the ideal dog for us (other than Kahlua, of course ;) ).

First Week 017

Morning came and I made the dreaded call to the vet. I was praying over and over that she wouldn’t have an owner. When I called they knew right away who she was when I gave them her chip number. The lady on the phone told me that Stella was actually living with a foster family last she knew, and that she was part of the organization known as Smiley Dog Rescue. There was hope!

First Week 021

The lady on the phone put me in touch with a contact at Smiley Dog Rescue and it turns out that she was up for adoption! So that day I took off work so I could get all the paperwork filled out so that we could adopt this funny dog, and also so she wouldn’t be home alone at a strange house. I don’t think it could’ve gone any better if we had planned it ourselves! :)

First Week 030

A little background about Stella: when she was a little puppy she got very sick and almost died. Her owners at that time relinquished her to the vet because they couldn’t afford to vaccinate her and get her fixed. The vet brought Stella back to health, fixed her and was able to place her with Smiley Dog Rescue. When she showed up at our house last week, she apparently got out of the backyard of the foster home she was staying at – which happens to be about five blocks from our house.

First Week 035

She has been such a joy!

First Week 048

And she’s quite photogenic!

First Week 036

Definitely a handful, because she is only six months old. Which also means she’ll grow about 20 more pounds. Oof!

First Week 027

But how can you be angry at a face like this? :)

First Week 045

She gets along great with other dogs and loves dog parks. Which is great for us because it’s a way for us to wear her out.

First Week 051

She snores like a grown man, but sleeps through the night so we take the good with the bad.

First Week 032

Her BFF is my parents’ dog, Hattie. They became fast friends.

Kahlua

Kahlua however, is not a fan. She’s not too thrilled with our decision to bring this new dog into the house. She was such a nervous wreck the first few days after Stella found us. No worries though, because Kahlua has shown her who’s boss and I think she’s realizing that Stella isn’t going anywhere soon – much to her dismay, I’m sure. ;)

First Week 047

So, our family of three has grown to a family of four. Unexpectedly; but we’re pretty excited to have an (eventual) playmate for Kahlua, a big dog to keep me safe when Kevin travels and the kind of pet that Kevin has wanted for a long time.

Blessed,
